GEMASS is a research unit of Paris-Sorbonne University and CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique), also supported by the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH).

GEMASS was created in 1971 by Raymond BOUDON who steered the unit until 1998. Mohamed CHERKAOUI steered it from 1999 to 2009. Olivier GALLAND steered it from 2010 to 2018. Pierre DEMEULENAERE and Gianluca MANZO were respectively Director and Deputy-Director in 2018-2019. Michel DUBOIS has been the Director of GEMASS since September 1, 2019.

The unit is located in Paris, both at the Site Pouchet, 59-61 rue Pouchet (17e arr.) and at the Maison de la recherche de la Sorbonne, 28 rue Serpente (5e arr.).
